PAIN AND PALLIATIVE CARE CENTRE
Analysis of patient records in the collegiate hospital revealed that
there is a rapid growth of patient visited for cancer treatment in homoeopathic
system. As a follow up measure the institution has initiated steps to
establish a Pain and Palliative Care Unit in the Collegiate Hospital for the
treatment, terminal care of cancer affected people and awareness programme. The
unit started functioning on 15th December 2014. The unit
conducts awareness programme and classes throughout the Kanniyakumari District
in association with NGOs. It also conducts screening programmes aimed at early
detection of cancer cases, homoeopathic treatment to cancer patients, home
visits to affected people for remedy, and cancer care through peripheral health
centers. Pallium Kulasekharam routinely visits the unit twice in month for
expertise care support. As an extension activity, the Palliative Care Unit of
the college hospital extends its service to cancer prone areas namely Colachel,
Kovalam (Kanniyakumari) and Manakudy through the Peripheral Centers. The
performance has proved that the initiative is very successful. Amendments have
already been made for admitting patients demanding emergency management with
the intension for assessing the scope of homeopathy in management of cancer.
The present unit head of the initiative is Dr. N. V. Sugathan,Principal &
Professor, Department of Practice Medicine and Dr. V. Harisankar, Associate
Professor, Department of Practice of Medicine as Medical Officer.
